It’s December 2020, who would have thought that the world would be upside down, businesses would be shut down, restaurants closed, people aren’t traveling, and so much more. For a lot of businesses throughout the early portions of the pandemic it was make or break. But I’m here to say that now is the real make or break. Think about this for the businesses that were able to survive and reopen, I'm sure most of them barely made it to the point where they could do so. But with a second shutdown looming in many parts of the country and world, most businesses won’t open a second time. To stand out in a covid world, you need to be innovative in how you are reaching your customers. Meaning you need to take a digital strategy if you haven’t already done so, and if you have, you need to up your time and focus. We are not gonna stay that the traditional marketing tactics are done for, but even once restrictions are lifted, and a vaccine is introduced, and people are going back to the office, many people will still work from home and utilize Amazon and order products or services online as it is a normal part of their lives now. As a small business, you have to stay ahead of the curve, and find ways to get your products in front of your customers.
Some of the ways to stand out, and the most important way is to be CONSISTENT. Marketing is about staying at the top of customers' minds, as they say “out of sight, out of mind”. So, what does that mean? That means that if you are going to post 3 times a week, make sure to post three times a week. If you are going to have Q&A’s on social media with your followers, be sure to do so every week. If you are going to send monthly newsletters be sure to send newsletters every month.
After being consistent, you also need to understand exactly where your customers are at online. You need to know what platforms they are using, how to position yourself on each platform, and how to talk to them. If you are a restaurant or you sell clothes or products, you need to be able to allow your customers to make orders online and have the systems in place to fulfill those needs.
For those of you who are not sure how to make your website if you have one easily accessible to making orders read on. Websites that allow customers to make orders for products are called E-Commerce websites. These are sites where customers go to and make orders for a product online without having to physically go to the business. Then the products that they paid for online are then shipped by the business to the customers location. For service providers like restaurants you can implement an ordering platform that allows people to order online and have them come pickup the order or deliver it to them.
The purpose behind this is to say, that as a business now and going forward you need to have a E-commerce website. Doing so allows your customers no matter where they are at or what time of the day to purchase products.
It’s essential that you showcase the personal side of who you are. Not being able to see or interact with each other on a regular basis, people need other ways to feel as though they are around you. Getting creative and keeping up with trends, but also creating your own trend, can go a long way in helping grow your online presence.
Even though we may not be able to meet in person, it’s still important to network and expand your presence and continue making new connections. If you are having difficulties finding groups or communities online there are sites such as Meetup.com and Eventbrite where you may be able to find groups and either meet weekly, monthly and online events to attend for free.
